Aluminum Foil in Pharmaceutical Blister Packaging

Pharmaceutical blister packaging

Pharmaceutical blister packaging is also called blister packaging. The materials used are mainly PTP pharmaceutical aluminum foil and hard plastic sheet. Blister packaging is used for packaging tablets, pills and capsules.

PTP medicinal aluminum foil is a sealing material sealed on a plastic hard sheet, usually using 8011 aluminum foil as the base material, which has the characteristics of non-toxic, corrosion-resistant, impermeable, heat-resistant, moisture-proof, light-blocking, and can be sterilized at high temperature.

The plastic hard sheet material is usually polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) or composite materials.

Aluminum foil (PTP) structure for blister packaging: OP protective layer, AL aluminum foil base material, VC adhesive layer.

Aluminum foil alloy for blister: 8011 aluminum foil, 8021 aluminum foil, thickness 0.025-0.08mm.

Performance requirements of aluminum foil for pharmaceutical blister packaging

Good sealing performance

First of all, it must have good sealing performance. Sealing performance refers to the degree of sealing between the aluminum foil and the packaging material. Drugs need to be stored in a sealed environment to avoid the intrusion of external factors such as moisture and oxygen.

Good tear resistance

Secondly, it must also have good tear resistance. During transportation, storage and use, pharmaceutical packaging may be subjected to various forces, such as extrusion and pulling. If the heat sealing strength of the aluminum foil is not high enough, it is prone to cracking, tearing, etc., resulting in damage to the packaging, which in turn affects the quality and safety of the drug.

Certain temperature resistance

In addition, it also needs to have a certain temperature resistance. Temperature is an important factor in the production and consumption of pharmaceuticals. Aluminum foil needs to withstand a higher temperature during the heat-sealing process to ensure the heat-sealing effect is achieved.

Good corrosion resistance

Finally, good corrosion resistance is also required. Pharmaceuticals often contain active ingredients that may have a corrosive effect on packaging materials. As a part of pharmaceutical cold aluminum blister packaging, aluminum foil must be able to resist the erosion of corrosive substances in pharmaceuticals, maintain its original mechanical properties and shape stability, and ensure the integrity and reliability of the packaging.
